SUMMARY:Mother's Day and 'Imagine No Malaria'
DESCRIPTION:This year on Sunday, May 12, Mother's Day, churches may help
find a permanent solution for a major health crisis affecti
ng mothers in Africa. Each year, more than 655,000 people d
ie from malaria in Africa. Up to 90 percent of them are wome
n and children. Pregnant mothers and children under age five
are the groups most vulnerable to the deadly disease.A chur
ch’s support of the Imagine No Malaria campaign of the Unite
d Methodist Church can help reduce death and suffering by 20
 15.  Thousands of congregations across the United States hav
e already helped to raise $31.2 million. When a church recei
ves an offering on May 12 in honor of its mothers, 100 perce
nt of the contributions will go to the fight against malaria
.  Order special offering envelopes, posters, and bulletin i

SUMMARY:'Songs of the Common Man' Spring Concert, David Johnson Chor
 us, Covenant UMC, Cordova, TN
DESCRIPTION:Songs of the Common ManSpring concert by David Johnson Choru
sCovenant UMC, 8350 Walnut Grove Rd., Cordova, TNFriday, Jun
 e 7, 7 p.m."Sometimes things can be expressed in a song that
can't be talked about out loud."  This is opening comment m
ade by David Johnson, Director of the David Johnson Chorus,
in describing the chorus' concert theme this spring.  "I'm c
alling it 'Songs of the Common Man,'" Johnson explains.  "Th
e songs come from three different eras of social stress in o
ur country:  the 1950's and 60's; the time of westward movem
ent into the Appalachians by our forefathers; and the time o
f slavery."The chorus will be singing a number of familiar f
olksongs from the fifties and sixties.  Some people called t
hem "campfire songs" because they were tunes that were easil
y sung and lyrics easily remembered among groups of teenager
 s.  There will be songs made famous by Peter, Paul and Mary,
Pete Seeger, The Brothers Four, The Limelighters, and The C
hristie Minstrels.  Many in the audience will remember Puff
the Magic Dragon, This Land is Your Land, Michael Row the Bo
at Ashore, If I Had a Hammer and the haunting Where Have All
the Flowers Gone?  And in the spirit of authenticity, the o
nly accompaniment the chorus will use will be various member
s of the group playing guitars. When immigrants from Scotland
and Ireland moved westward toward the Appalachians they int
roduced a style of singing that is known as Sacred Harp, als
o called fa-sol-la singing because emphasis was placed on le
arning the names of the shape notes.  This singing was most
recently featured in the movie adaptation of the book "Cold
Mountain."  The harmonies are haunting and the subject matte
r heart breaking due to the difficult lives they experienced
.  The last section of the concert will be of Negro Spiritua
ls.  This genre has long been a hallmark of DJC.  Slaves bro
ught tunes with them from Africa and infused them with words
that reflected not only the hardships of their lives but al
so of the hope they had in the hereafter, a place of joy and
  peace.
