Trustee looks forward to working with president to strengthen connection to Lambuth

Written: 10/27/2009

The Rev. Ted Leach, senior pastor of Jackson, Tenn.’s First United Methodist Church and a member of Lambuth University’s Board of Trustees, commented on Lambuth’s new president.

In the midst of Lambuth’s financial difficulties, the SACS team that visited last fall (for the regular 10-year re-accreditation) praised the faculty’s morale and said Lambuth’s academics are “exemplary.”

Several strong candidates emerged as potential leaders for Lambuth, each of whom would have been a great choice. When I saw the faculty’s good rapport with Bill Seymour and their strong support of him as their potential leader, it made an otherwise difficult decision much easier.

Bill Seymour understands the importance of building and maintaining high morale among students, faculty and staff, as well as the various constituencies of a university. He understands that the root of the word “administration” is “ministry,” and he sees his work at Lambuth as an act of ministry. He understands the unique role of a church-related university.

I’m looking forward to working with Bill to strengthen Lambuth’s connection with the Memphis Conference and other faith communities in West Tennessee.

I look forward to working with Bill as a Lambuth trustee. Because I serve a church near the campus, I will have an opportunity to be involved with Bill in a variety of projects. He understands it is important to be engaged with the community. I serve on the Conference Leadership Development Action Team and our team is excited about the new major in Religion and Christian Ministry (featured in the Oct. 16, 2009 issue of the Memphis Conference Reporter).
