Intentional Discipleship Action Team
Sue Engle is the Intentional Discipleship Action Team Leader. Contact her at sue.engle@gmail.com. The next workshops sponsored by the Intentional Discipleship Action Team will be "Passionate Worship: Your Next Steps" which will be held at Covenant UMC on August 29 and Union City First UMC on September 12. (Click on the link for a copy of the brochure with registration material.)
Taylor Burton-Edwards from the General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) will be assisting those at the workshop to explore passionate worship and how we might enhance the worship of our local churches.
Whether we are a large membership church or a small rural church, there are steps we can take to insure that we are being faithful in our worship of God and worshiping in Spirit and in truth.
Taylor will help us evaluate where we are and discuss what our next steps could be.
The Rev. Burton-Edwards is an elder in the North Indiana Conference currently serving as Director of Worship Resources with the General Board of Discipleship. His academic training and interests are in early Christian history, theology and liturgy as well as in Christian social ministry and the intersections of worship, discipleship and mission. Taylor has led congregations of varying size and context in Indiana and brings considerable experience and expertise to us.
Every church is asked to send enough members to attend various breakout sessions along with three of the church’s worship bulletins. (You can learn a lot about how your church worships by reading your bulletin!) They will consider their church’s own next steps.
It’s time to get out those toolboxes you received at Annual Conference 2009 and figure out how to use them for fall programming in your church. This year’s toolbox is entitled 2009 Wesleyan Essentials and contains some great resources as well as the opportunity to get more at a discount. It’s the toolbox that keeps on giving!
The order forms have discounts of 20% to 40%. If you take advantage of these, it is a double win. You can support the United Methodist publisher as well as be good stewards of your resources. Please use this order form to receive the discount.
Opening Ourselves to Grace is a DVD/CD with two different study options. One is four week sessions that will discuss the basics of Wesleyan theology of grace. There is a discussion guide that accompanies each week’s lesson. The material is very good. In addition there is a six week study by Steve Manskar from GBOD with more material on grace. These studies can be used together or separately.
Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition is a twelve week study of John Wesley’s sermons for today. Each week you read a sermon and respond in the workbook to questions based on your reading. This comes from Wesley Theological Seminary and can be used as a group study or individually.
The Way of Grace is a nine week Companions in Christ study in Spiritual Formation. This is a wonderful small group resource. You will explore the Gospel of John and experience grace through the stories of people who received grace from Jesus.
All of these materials help us identify those core principles that make United Methodists unique.
