United Methodist Neighborhood Centers
A Century of Help and Hope
Founded in 1907, United Methodist Neighborhood Centers (UMNC) was originally established to provide day care and outreach programs to the citizens of Memphis. A century later, that vision has expanded dramatically.
With a volunteer base of over 450 members and staff, UMNC harnesses the resources of United Methodist Churches throughout the Memphis Conference to serve tens of thousands of individuals each year through a variety of educational efforts, assistance programs and social services.
A United Way agency since the 1980s, UMNC has also served over 2,500 Katrina Neighbors, providing them with food, clothing, furniture and hygiene supplies even after community agencies have ceased services to evacuees.
In 2007, UMNC opened a new food pantry at Asbury UMC, bringing the number of its Social Service Centers to six. The Susanna Wesley Senior Day Care and Alzheimer’s Center is also scheduled to open in late 2008, opening an entirely new avenue to UMNC’s social ministry efforts.
